How Affordable Are Master’s in AI Programs?
Deterred by exorbitant sticker prices at big name universities? There’s good news for students interested in earning an online Master’s in Artificial Intelligence on a budget. Universities around the country are launching reputable AI graduate programs at affordable prices with the goal of recruiting students who are serious about their ROI in AI education.
This is your ultimate guide to the schools that offer an affordable online Master’s in AI. Our team manually researched costs and credit requirements, crunched the numbers, and sorted every online Master’s in Artificial Intelligence by its total program cost.
You won’t find expensive AI programs with a sticker price of $50,000+ here. Instead, you’ll learn about the 32 most affordable online Master’s in AI programs under $30,000—there’s even one under $10,000! We profile each school, discuss what makes their AI program affordable, and uncover the unique student experiences that make each program worth the money.
Rankings Methodology
Here are the factors we used to determine the most affordable AI degrees under $30k, including how we calculated program costs:
- Total Tuition: We started by collecting data on the credits required to graduate and the cost-per-credit rate for the master’s degree. For schools that charged tuition on a per semester basis, we used 5 semesters for programs that didn’t specify a timeline. We’ve also included any mandatory online or technology fees in our calculations, which is why our estimate may be a little higher than the price quoted on the program website.
- Tuition Type: At public universities, tuition rates can differ based on a student studying in-state versus out-of-state. In addition, some schools have a separate per credit tuition rate for online graduate students. To keep things fair, we always used the online student rate or out-of-state rate for our cost quotes. However, you may be able to find lower tuition rates for an online AI graduate program from a public university in your area. If this appeals to you, browse AI programs by state.
- Program Focus: We only considered programs in artificial intelligence or related degrees with AI tracks, such as a Master of Science in Computer Science with an AI concentration. That means we didn’t include Online Machine Learning (ML) programs, which we cover elsewhere. In the past year, we’ve seen some innovative options popping up, including the Master of Science in AI in Medicine (MS AIM).
- Online Status: To appear in these affordable rankings, AI graduate programs must be 100% online or mostly online with minimal on-campus requirements. We should mention that a number of schools will offer the same program in an alternative hybrid format. So folks who live close to the universities in our rankings are in luck!
- Accreditation: Programs must hold appropriate regional accreditation in order to be considered. While nearly every affordable AI program on this list is offered by a non-profit university, it is not a requirement for inclusion.

How to Choose an Affordable Online Master’s in AI
To keep pace with student demand, universities have been doubling down on offering low-cost online graduate programs in artificial intelligence. Our cost table now features 32 affordable degrees under $30,000, almost twice the number of offerings that we highlighted last year.
But with that choice may come confusion. It can be difficult to make a decision when you’re looking at 10+ online MSCS and MSAI programs that are all in the same price range. If you’re in this position, here are some ways to whittle your shortlist down to a few options.
MSCS vs. MSAI: Generally speaking, the MSCS is going to start with coursework in computer science “breadth” areas that are unrelated to AI. An MSAI is almost always going to launch you straight into artificial intelligence credits. On the other hand, an online MSAI may not feature advanced technical electives or opportunities for self-directed research. Always check the curriculum to see which way the program is leaning. We also go into more detail about the differences between the MSCS, the MSAI, and related majors in our guide to the Best Master’s in AI Programs.
Oddball Majors: This year, we’ve added a number of unique artificial intelligence programs for professionals in specific industries. These industries include medicine (e.g. UAB and UofL), business leadership (e.g. Ball State), business analytics (e.g. USF and Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota), and cybersecurity (e.g. Webster and Nova Southeastern). As the titles suggest, these programs will be laser-focused on AI issues within your area of expertise. If you’d prefer something that’s a little less specialist, consider the MSAI programs that ground you in AI principles and then allow you to select electives in your area of interest.
Research Universities vs. Smaller Schools: In our rankings of affordable online graduate AI programs, there are a number of public research universities (e.g. Georgia Tech, UT Austin, USF, etc.). Big schools like these will have the clout to fund AI labs & centers and may have valuable ties to industry & government partners. So they’re great choices if you’re interested in exploring original research ideas or tackling a real-world capstone project. If you’d prefer a more personalized online program with fewer students, smaller schools like New England College and Christian options like Indiana Wesleyan University and Campbellsville University may be more relevant.
Departmental Strengths: In the program summaries, you’ll find links to departmental websites, faculty profiles, and AI labs. Use these resources to get a sense of the “personality” of the school. For example, Dakota State, Kennesaw State, and Auburn might be strong picks if you’re fascinated by the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. UWM could appeal to folks who are working on AI applications in advanced manufacturing. If a capstone or thesis is included in the program, think about how the work of your professors could intersect with your research topic. Most programs provide links to faculty bios.
Unique Curriculum Elements: Employers will always want to see evidence of AI work experience and hard skills on your résumé. So keep an eye out for programs that include work on real-world industry projects, offer internships as electives, arrange virtual networking opportunities, and allow you to add graduate certificates or micro-credentials in your area of interest. Because universities are playing catch-up with AI, we always recommend chatting to recent alumni to find out if the MS coursework was outdated or too theoretical. You don’t want to pay for something you could do for free online.
