Artificial Intelligence Education in Michigan
Michigan is rapidly evolving as its cities increasingly embrace artificial intelligence technologies. While it doesn’t offer as many in-person AI master’s degrees as nearby states like Illinois, colleges like the University of Michigan provide a few options. The Ann Arbor campus has an M.Eng. in Data Science and Machine Learning. The college is home to the Michigan AI Laboratory, where you’ll find collaborations between a diverse research group of faculty, researchers, and students.
Another option is the M.S. in Artificial Intelligence at Lawrence Technological University, a joint effort from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS). They developed the program to continue their ongoing success in training students for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Online Master’s in Artificial Intelligence Programs in Michigan
What Michigan doesn’t offer for in-person programs, it makes up for with online degrees. One such program is Davenport University’s online M.S. in Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence. The NSA and DHS designated Davenport’s College of Technology as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE). It is one of the only schools in the state to receive both designations.
Kettering University offers the online M.Eng. in Artificial Intelligence. The college was listed as No. 1 in the College Gazette’s 10 Best Automotive Engineering Schools in the U.S. in 2021 and is home to the Autonomous Driving and Artificial Intelligence (ADAI) Laboratory.
At the University of Michigan Dearborn, you can opt for the online M.S. in Artificial Intelligence or go with the online M.Eng. in Automotive Engineering at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
The Artificial Intelligence Industry in Michigan
Michigan is working hard to transform its economy and embrace modern technologies like artificial intelligence, especially in cities like Detroit, which was once the heart of the American automotive industry. Now, companies like Volkswagen are transforming the industry by leveraging AI. The German car manufacturer is establishing an AI unit in the city dedicated to advancing the development of autonomous vehicles.
Many of the other developments are driven by the state’s universities. Back in 2020, a team of researchers at Michigan State University joined a $20 million initiative that encourages collaboration between institutions across the country to use AI to lower costs and achieve high sustainability on American farms. Called the Artificial Intelligence for Future Agricultural Resilience, Management and Sustainability Institute, it pulls together experts to solve critical issues in agriculture.
The state is also home to many AI companies, so there are plenty of career opportunities for students pursuing AI master’s degrees. These companies include blockchain development company SoluLab, software service provider Beyond Key, and analytics solutions provider Ironside.
Michigan still has to catch up to other states regarding AI, but it offers many paths forward for AI master’s graduates. The most important thing to remember is that Michigan has been an industry leader throughout its modern history. It has the tools necessary to achieve this again in an AI-driven future.
