Artificial Intelligence Education in New York
New York sits alongside California and Texas as one of the nation’s leaders in artificial intelligence education. Students will find master’s programs in nearly any branch of AI, from machine learning to natural language processing. This should come as no surprise — New York is home to some of the countries top tech companies and elite universities like Cornell and Columbia.
Cornell University offers many different artificial intelligence degree programs, including the Computer Science Department’s M.Eng in Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence. The computer science department is one of the oldest in the country and has developed one of the top AI education groups globally. Fun fact — University President Martha Elizabeth Pollack specializes in AI and serves on the Board of Directors at IBM.
The university launched a new AI initiative in December 2021, expanding faculty in all areas impacted by AI technologies. AI scholars across the university developed the initiative, and it aims to increase collaboration between the departments regarding the development, application, and implications of AI.
Another of the state’s top institutions, New York University (NYU), offers an M.S. in Mechatronics and Robotics. The program allows students to specialize in either Assistive Mechatronic and Robotic Technologies, Mobile Robotics, or Microrobotics. Students complete six credit hours within their specialty and 24 credits from required coursework and electives.
NYU has many different labs focused on artificial intelligence topics. For example, the Machine Learning for Good Laboratory develops machine learning methods to tackle critical urban problems. The lab works with public sector partners to advance machine learning while improving the quality of public health and safety. Some of the other related labs at NYU include the Algorithms and Foundations Group and the Agile Robotics and Perception Lab.
Online Master’s in Artificial Intelligence Programs in New York
Students interested in online AI degrees will be pleased with the range of options available in New York. For example, Columbia University offers numerous AI programs online, including their Online M.S. in Computer Science with Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing concentrations. Over at Pace University, the Online M.S. in Computer Science features an Artificial Intelligence track. It’s a STEM-designated program, meaning it focuses on areas of technology that are in high demand. Finally, consider Yeshiva University’s Online M.S. in Artificial Intelligence. It provides foundational AI knowledge before diving deeper into NLP, machine learning, and related technologies.
If you’d prefer an online certificate program, you’re in luck! Columbia University offers two online graduate certificate programs in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligence Systems, while Cornell offers online graduate certificates in Machine Learning and Marketing AI.
How Artificial Intelligence is Used in New York
New York’s AI landscape is exceptionally advanced compared to the rest of the United States. The state is full of educational institutions, non-profits, advocacy groups, foundations, and government agencies focused on advancing artificial intelligence technologies. For example, Wall Street is home to the largest financial institutions like Goldman Sachs and BlackRock, which use AI in the growing “fintech” sector.
Many of the country’s largest AI companies are headquartered in New York City, so funding pours into the state. New York City is the world’s second most valuable tech ecosystem at $147 billion, and it continues to evolve rapidly. Its tech sector employed more than 330,000 people before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Yeshiva University, the NY metro area offers the most artificial intelligence jobs in the country.
The state is also a leader in AI regulation and ethics, which is crucial as these technologies become further ingrained into society. In November 2021, the New York City Council passed a bill prohibiting employers from using AI hiring tools unless they passed an audit that detects bias. One month prior, the NYC Council launched its AI Strategy to prepare for the coming AI revolution. The strategy hopes to ensure the ethical use of AI as it becomes a focus of educational institutions, private businesses, and government offices.
Thanks to the state’s more than 9,000 startups, over $70 billion in startup valuations and exits per year, public sector investments and initiatives, and highly-regarded academic institutions, New York is a top destination for students and professionals passionate about artificial intelligence.
